Andy Hibel 0:03
Welcome to the HigherEdJobs podcast playlist edition. I'm Andy Hibel the chief operating officer and one of the co-founders of HigherEdJobs.
Kelly Cherwin 0:11
And I'm Kelly Cherwin, the director of Editorial Strategy.
Mike Walker 0:15
I'm Mike Walker, producer on the HigherEdJobs podcast. While cleaning up my files during a recent recording break, I came across a couple of playlist episodes that we had never aired. We always have a blast recording the playlist episodes, and these were especially fun. Additionally, Aditya Johri and Alana McConnell suggest some great songs for the playlist. So with no further ado, I present to you the HigherEdJobs Lost Playlists Episode.
Kelly Cherwin 0:42
Today on our special playlist edition, we have Aditya Johri, who's going to add his song.
Andy Hibel 0:48
And maybe we could set the table for you just a little bit. We have a Spotify playlist where we've put songs from. We've put a couple of our own, but mainly from guests that we feel are appropriate songs to help people in their job search because we believe every job search needs a soundtrack. We have a number of working songs and a number of job search songs or a number of inspirational songs, and a number of what I would call venting songs that folks have put on there. So if you have a song and some people have taken a couple of songs because they have a hard time deciding that you'd like to add, we'd love to have you add one to the list.
Aditya Johri 1:26
I was thinking more, I think, of songs that I relate to teaching and learning or being a faculty and one of the songs. I don't know how many folks have ever heard. There was a movie called The Sir with Love with Sidney Poitier in the 1960s, and the title song of that movie it's by Lulu, and it's called Sir With Love, and it's one of my favorite songs. It's about why you should be a teacher and the role you can play in the lives of kids. It's like an inspirational song that people should listen to. It's a really old song, but I really like it. So that would be my one suggestion.
Kelly Cherwin 2:04
That can be more perfect.
Andy Hibel 2:06
Could not be more perfect. Not only do I know the movie, I know the song, and I love the song. That is a fantastic addition.
Kelly Cherwin 2:13
Way, way too young to know.
Andy Hibel 2:20
It's kind of funny. It actually kind of jars a memory me, a positive memory of middle school, which for some of us there aren't a lot of. And that is my seventh grade science teacher as we were working on the homework assignment. On Fridays, I'd like to give us a little time in class so we wouldn't have homework. I believe his name was Mr. Luger's in Sylvania, Ohio. If any of you from Sylvania or know him, please make sure to let us know. But he would play the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young song Teach Your Children.
Aditya Johri 2:53
That was my third song. So that was my second song. While Pink Floyd kind of the break in the wall. I mean, that song is completely opposite, it is iconic. And the third was Teach Your Children Well. So I'm glad you brought it up.
Andy Hibel 3:13
Yeah, well Adi, I think in our other podcast that we did together, we talked about time management. We have in about three and a half minutes, added three songs to the playlist. So Adi, we thank you because we now have three new songs to put on the playlist and thank you for sharing. And hey, if you're listening to the playlist, I think each one of those songs has a very good moment to be listened to. The Pink Floyd edition. Yeah, that's that's definitely a point. And there were some days you might need that. Thank you again for being with us.
Kelly Cherwin 3:44
Thanks, Adi.
Aditya Johri 3:45
Thank you, guys. I really appreciate it.
Mike Walker 3:47
Andy sometimes give some trivia about the songs chosen for the playlist, but he didn't this time. And although I thought I heard it before, I couldn't remember it at all. So I went back and listened to it. It oozes that feeling of orchestra meets rock band from the sixties pop era, and while looking for some interesting trivia, I fell down a rabbit hole. I listened to ten or 15 covers of the song from Al Green to Susanna Hoffs to the haunting, Trashcan Sinatra's version. I kept comparing them all to the Lulu version, which was absolutely my favorite by far. And then I came across a version that I have to mention Madeline Bell covered To Sir with Love on her 1968 album, Doing Things. The arrangement of the song on that album is amazing. I could go on for hours, but we have another recording to get to, so let's get back to it and listen in on our conversation with Ayanna McConnell as she gives a couple more suggestions.
Kelly Cherwin 4:54
Today, we are lucky to have Ayanna McConnell join us for our HigherEdJobs playlist. So for those of you who aren't familiar with the playlist, we always think that, you know, you need a special song to motivate you during your job search or keep you going at work. And I know Andy is always the one that's that's talking about this. I told him like, Hey, it's my turn. I'm I want to ask the question today. So, Ayanna, do you have one or two songs that you can can add to our playlist that you think our HigherEdJob listeners should know about?
Ayanna McConnell 5:26
I will share one that ironically was playing on the satellite radio station this morning, coming in. So it's perfect timing and it's Keni Burke's Rise to the Top. Early eighties. What I love about this song is so many people have sampled it and so hearing the original just gave me different appreciation. But the lyrics are very encouraging to someone who's seeking their next opportunity to be great in the world.
Kelly Cherwin 5:55
We all need a little motivation. So that sounds like a great song.
Andy Hibel 5:58
Can we ask what satellite radio station you're listening to?
Ayanna McConnell 6:02
I was listening to Satellite 40. I just transitioned from 45 to get the politics update for my news and then went over 47.
Andy Hibel 6:13
That sounds like a good order to do it. And and Kelly, I.
Ayanna McConnell 6:15
Actually know this song was on 45. It was on. Yes. Way in the morning. Yep.
Andy Hibel 6:21
There we go.
Mike Walker 6:22
I can't believe they canceled Yacht Rock. We're so disappointed.
Kelly Cherwin 6:25
Do you want to take our opportunity to make fun of my. My musical taste or What do you do, Andy?
Andy Hibel 6:30
No, not at all. I was just wondering if somebody is looking for the Pirate John's playlist where maybe located?
Ayanna McConnell 6:37
Because that was going to be my question.
Kelly Cherwin 6:39
So, yes, if you're listening, if you're if you're interested in finding our playlist, you can find us on Spotify.
Mike Walker 6:45
Did you have another song I thought you had said you might have, two. I'm intrigued.
Ayanna McConnell 6:50
Well.
Mike Walker 6:51
You don't have to have a second.
Ayanna McConnell 6:53
So Canned Heat by Jamiroquai is just a song that motivates me because I love to dance and I love his musical style. And sometimes when you're in a job search, you just need to feel exhilaration. And that song brings me exhilaration.
Mike Walker 7:12
That's awesome.
Kelly Cherwin 7:13
I'm with you. I like to dance, too.
Mike Walker 7:15
I think it's great, too. You got to get out of your seat and move.
Ayanna McConnell 7:19
That's right.
Mike Walker 7:20
You can't just stare at the screen for hours on end looking for a job.
Ayanna McConnell 7:24
Yeah. Sometimes you need to have a dance party by yourself and get back to it.
Mike Walker 7:27
Maybe with the dog or the cat.
Kelly Cherwin 7:29
Hopefully my neighbors haven't seen, because I often do have some dance parties at my house.
Andy Hibel 7:35
Maybe we'll have to do a dance party version of the podcast.
Kelly Cherwin 7:39
Oh, maybe. We're always evolving.
Andy Hibel 7:41
We're always evolving.
Ayanna McConnell 7:44
Yeah, that's how you keep it fresh.
Andy Hibel 7:45
Exactly. All right.
Kelly Cherwin 7:47
Well, thank you, Ayanna.
Andy Hibel 7:49
It was wonderful meeting you. Have a have a tremendous rest of your day.
Ayanna McConnell 7:52
Thank you. This is so fun.
Andy Hibel 7:54
