The Playlist: New Songs for Your Job Search
Andy Hibel 0:03
Welcome to the HigherEdJobs Podcast, Playlist edition. I'm Andy Hibel, the chief operating officer and one of the co-founders of HigherEdJobs.
Kelly Cherwin 0:11
And I'm Kelly Cherwin, the director of editorial strategy. We're excited to have Kathleen Hermacinski back today to discuss her addition to our HigherEdJobs playlist.
Andy Hibel 0:20
So, Kathleen, we had you on a few months ago and we had a little bit of a conversation about the song that Kelly added to the playlist. The playlist as you know, is a playlist on Spotify that you can download of songs about job search and songs to fuel your career. Because every good job searching career deserves a soundtrack. That is a part of my personal philosophy. I don't think HigherEdJobs has endorsed it, so I can't say it's part of the HigherEdJobs official philosophy. But we're going to have you add to the playlist. But the song that we discussed was and the song that Kelly had added is Journey's Don't Stop Believing, and I have a pretty strong reaction to the song. Can't say I disliked it back in the day, but since its rebirth and the evolution of the band, I can't say if I've kind of not really appreciated the song. But I heard that you had a little bit different of an opinion on that song.
Kathleen Hermacinski 1:20
I think, Andy, you just stopped believing. And so the rest of us need to never stop believing because it was the exit to my wedding. So my husband and I leave our wedding reception to don't stop believing and just know I've never stopped believing ever something
Andy Hibel 1:37
interesting.
Kathleen Hermacinski 1:39
But I do have a different song to add to the playlist. If you're okay with that. If it's not Journey's.
Andy Hibel 1:43
I guess I feel like I need to explain myself to somebody who has such a strong liking to the song. Now, the message of the song I can't disagree with. I think it's a very good message. I think it's a solid message. The song has been reborn. In fact, it was very much reborn over the past 15, 20 years. But I kind of feel it's the messengers that I have a problem with as opposed to the message. And what I what I did is I did a quick Google search of some of the acrimony, I'd say within the band. Here we have Jonathan Cain accuses Neil Schon of destroying the journey brand journeys. Jonathan Cain suing Neil Schon after allegedly spending over $1,000,000 on Band's credit card. Neil Schon tells Jonathan Cain in response to get off the Kool aid, Steve Perry now bringing the former lead singer into it. Steve Perry drops song trademarks against former Journey bandmates Schon and Cain. And then we'll just sum it up with bandmates who hate each other as kind of a shorthand to all of this that it's hard for me to digest the message of Don't Stop Believing when you have attorneys and litigation involved. So I guess that's where I kind of come from and wanting to defend my position now, which feels like against the whole world at this point. But like I feel like I need to speak my peace here. I respect that, that the message is good, though.
Kathleen Hermacinski 3:08
This is why you don't meet your idols, is you just to enjoy the product that they give us, whether it's a sports athlete or something else. You don't need to worry about Journey, just worry about the song. Right? But I respect where you're coming from. I totally understand.
Andy Hibel 3:21
So love the art, not the artist, is what you're saying.
Kathleen Hermacinski 3:24
Yes, exactly.
Kelly Cherwin 3:25
Yeah. You didn't need to go to Google and give us all of that,
Andy Hibel 3:28
So, I'm going to give that a try. And maybe the next time you're on the podcast, I'll let you know how that goes.
Kathleen Hermacinski 3:34
Perfect. I like a good compromise. Thank you, Andy.
Andy Hibel 3:37
Without any further discussion of a former song that was put on the playlist, what would you like to add to the playlist?
Kathleen Hermacinski 3:45
So as an H.R. person that has spoken about recruiting a couple of times on this podcast, sometimes you're not the best fit for that institution, but I want you to remember that you're the best from The Karate Kid. You're the best. Whether it's not at this institution or at this company, you're the best. You are the best. You'll be the best for that next institution. So my song is You're the Best from Joe Esposito, also widely known from The Karate Kid.
Andy Hibel 4:17
I know.
Kelly Cherwin 4:18
Awesome pick.
Andy Hibel 4:19
There's a great, great pick. And so apropos of the whole search process, I mean, sometimes it can be said that the best decisions you make in a job search are the jobs that you don't take or you don't get.
Andy Hibel 4:35
True. It's really important that if you don't get the job, remember you are the best. That just wasn't your job. That wasn't what was meant for you.
Kathleen Hermacinski 4:44
And you'll find the best fit when the time is right after you've listened to all of these podcast recordings from HigherEdJobs, you get all that recruiting knowledge that you have that again, you may not be the best at that time for that company, but you are the best in a different role for an organization that matches your values and the culture and everything else that you want. Don't forget.
Kelly Cherwin 5:05
There's only one of you. Yes, I agree.
Kathleen Hermacinski 5:07
Don't stop believing that you're the best. And that way I get two birds with one stone.
Andy Hibel 5:13
Kelly, You got anything you don't particularly about mentioning? Don't stop believing. You never, ever want to weigh in.
Kelly Cherwin 5:19
No, I as you know, I just don't know music as much as you do. So this is not my area to speak up and.
Andy Hibel 5:27
You're able to pick up the Karate Kid part very quickly about where where it was.
Kelly Cherwin 5:32
I mean, because I had my phone to Google it. That's all
Kathleen Hermacinski 5:35
She's honest. I appreciate that.
Andy Hibel 5:38
Kathleen, thank you so much for being brave enough to come on the podcast and place a song onto our playlist and I'm sure folks can go follow it now at Spotify and see it added. So thank you and we look forward to having you back on the podcast soon.
Kelly Cherwin 5:55
Thanks, Kathleen. See you soon.
Kathleen Hermacinski 5:57
Thanks, Andy. Thanks, Kelly. You guys are great and I'm happy to be here in Mobile.
Andy Hibel 6:01
So Kelly, we have a little bit of podcast housekeeping we need to do today.
Kelly Cherwin 6:05
And what is that?
Andy Hibel 6:06
Andy It's it's your favorite part of the podcast. It's our playlist.
Kelly Cherwin 6:11
Did it insert music there?
Andy Hibel 6:13
Mike's going to put a drum roll in this spot, but with what I've learned from the playlist episodes, you're never quite sure what Mike's going to do with that.
Oh, that's what we're going to get. So we're actually today, on behalf of Amanda from Rice University, putting a song on the playlist, she wrote to us and said, my go to hype song just before a job interview is I Got a Feeling by the Black Eyed Peas, which I kind of get like, that has the right vibe.
Kelly Cherwin 6:58
I did too. And actually, now that you just said that, I think I'm channeling my song from way back when I have the Tiger. I remember that getting pumped up type feeling and I think this is what is perfect. So thank you, Amanda, for that song and the feeling.
Andy Hibel 7:13
And Amanda, I really appreciate you sharing that and it's great to put it on the podcast playlist because I do think others are going to be hyped up by that song. When I was actually first doing job interviews way back when, they didn't have songs with words in them, they were just instrumentals. So just having words. And it's even better if you'd like to be like Amanda and suggest a song for our for our playlist, we would gladly put it on there. If it doesn't suck.
Mike Walker 7:41
So, no journey.
Kelly Cherwin 7:43
And he looks at me. Yes. Yep, yep. I knew it.
Andy Hibel 7:47
I would gladly put a podcast song on there for you if you're interested, please feel free to email us at podcast@HigherEdJobs. com or send us a direct message on X @higheredcareers. Thank you for listening. We look forward to talking with you soon.
